Toolbar not showing PR for any sites

Today I realised that the Google toolbar is not showing any PageRank anymore for any site. Whatever site I visit it remains grey.

Anybody else seeing this?

Mine has been like that for months. Not really sure what happened but it won't come back even after a reinstall. I'm pretty sure it stopped working sometime after a Windows Critical Update was run on this computer. It's still running Windows 98 SE.

We have the toolbar on one of our machines and thought there was a problem for a long time and found that a setting had simply toggled it off. Turned it back on and it worked great.

In the Toolbar FAQ I found a section that speaks of Firewalls not letting Google get all information they want to which could lead to PR not showing.

Maybe they changed something that my Firewall doesn't like but I dont't want to change my firewall settings.

Is anybody having those problems not using a firewall?

Not disputing that a firewall could be a problem but we have firewalls on our server as well as each network location with no problems so possibly you need to look to your security administrator to makes sure their are no bottlenecks.

We double checked with the security people. As the toolbar is running on many PCs with the same security settings it is probably not a problem of general security settings.

The toolbar is not working on a Windows 98 machine so maybe the problem only occurs with this OS (MarkHutch mentioned that he had the problem after a Windows update on his Windows 98 machine too)?

Anybody else having the same kind of problems with no Windows 98?

Any other ideas what might be the reason why from one day to another the toolbar should not be working anymore?

Large portal for example toolbar shows their regular PR8 at the homepage, all subsequent pages show PR0, behind firewall.
Seen this with many other sites.

Stupid question: could that somehow point to a PR or backlink update or both?!?

At least my case has nothing to do with a PR update. Even Google, Yahoo... show now PR. The Pagerank functionality is like it was turned off.

Just realised that Google updated the toolbar on the notebook not showing Pagerank.

It also has an option for Pagerank through Proxy (experimental). Maybe this helps some of the people having no PR on their toolbar.

For me I am still not seeing any PR for any site. But at least it looks like somebody might be working on it.

Are you running Windows 98 by chance or what OS are you using?

Strange thing anyway. It looks like it stopped working at about the same time as for us.

I have the same problem on a machine running XP. Only noticed a few weeks ago, but as we had just upgraded our router, I thought it may relate to that. Seems like it is more of a widespread problem...

I've been working on this problem again this morning. Still no solution, but I'm going to keep trying. I still think it has something to do with Windows critical update on the Windows 98 OS. I'll keep you guy updated and hopefully I can find something that will fix this problem.

Be sure that you didn't set the hosts file to look at a particular datacenter. If that datacenter goes offline, you'll get zero PR everywhere.

Thank you Rogerd, there was really an old hosts entry in the computer showing the problem.

Toolbar is working again!

Congratulation, zgb999. I just checked again and no hosts file problems. Ok I uninstalled the toolbar, deleted the .dll file and deleted all registry stuff for Google. Then I reinstalled the toolbar and still it won't work. Oh well.

Another vote for the hosts file. I hadn't been seeing a PR on one machine for a few weeks. Since it's a PC I rarely use anyway, I was just ignoring it... but that reminder prompted to look at the hosts file and there was an entry redirecting toolbarqueries. PageRank works fine now.

I don't think it was the hosts file alone in the beginning because I remember the hosts file has been checked out when the problems with the toolbar began. But as changing the hosts file did't help we left it as it was.

But it looks like they solved our problem with the latest toolbar update we got a week ago (though we only realised that it is working now after deleting the entry in the hosts file again).

I had this problem once. Noting I did seemed to help. Eventually had to reinstall windows.

After having a though about the whole issue, the only possible cause which might have triggered this was that I was constantly changing the Google DC ips in the hosts files for checking the Pr values. I have stopped doing that now.

I've had the same problem for a few weeks now and finally got around to looking at it.

Turns out it was the hosts file in my case also. I tried a few different data centre IP's with no luck (gray bar remained), but finally got success with 216.239.39.104
