Googling without a browser. I really like this one...

The Google Deskbar is a free software download that appears as a search box in the Windows taskbar at the bottom right of most Windows-based PCs. Users enter queries into the search box and results are automatically displayed in a small pane that rises above the Deskbar and overlays a corner of the application they’re using.

Is the Google Deskbar tracking any information about me at all?Yes. The Google Deskbar does collect information about the number of times you use each of its features when the Feedback Statistics option is turned on. By counting uses of specific features, we get an idea of which parts of the Google Deskbar users find most helpful. However, no personal information about you (name, address, phone number, etc.) or your searches is collected. And you can turn tracking off using the Options dialog box.
Also note that Google Deskbar checks once a day to see if a new update is available. This check is recorded by Google and cannot be disabled. In addition to ensuring you always have the latest version of the application, this connection to Google lets us know approximately how many active Google Deskbars are in use.
I'm also excited about the custom search tool. I've been using a QuickSearch.exe (for IE only). But this allows you to use quick keys. This is awesome! :)
non-IE browsers like Opera or Netscape?
Yup, the bugger opens in default browser, mine is Opera, created new page not a window, another plus.
On bug I have seen already, in a test of the movie review, I searched out the new matrix. Everything was fine until the pop-up hit. Ruined it, without a way of closing the pop-up. Need to import the tool-bar pop-up blocker and default it to yes.

When I resize the bar and re-lock the taskbar it jumps back to the original size :( Is there a way of makign the bar smaller and make it waste less space?

My only suggestion would to make it take up less space and maybe "slide" out when you start using it. Quick launch, plus a stocked system tray, a start button and 10 windows make my taskbar pretty crowded.
I like how the eyes move in the binoculars on a mouseover.

My Deskbar-loving friends want me to mention that if the deskbar takes up too much space, you can go to the "Options" dialog and turn on the checkbox that says "Resize search box automatically." That makes the search box shrink when you are not using it and grow when you are using it. That should work even if the Windows taskbar is locked.

Lets hope there will always be place for a toolbar in any future opetating system...
that AutoComplete suggestions is new to me, as well as the new shortcut to the Thesaurus.
There's an Excite article [apnews.excite.com] that says Windows 98 isn't supported, but it is.

Since Google has so many strategic partnerships with other companies they should make the Deskbar available via companies like AOL and Yahoo. It would have millions of users in months.Except that then all the viewers with Yahoo! and AOhelL would be skipping their home page (which is Y! and AOL). Probably not gonna win any friends among the higher ups with the various portals. I love it though.
