keyword "big red widgets" returns my site in ~ 600+ position. my understanding of how google supposed to work is, it would build a list of webpages that contain _all_ query words and than arrange pages according to their rank.

well, that doesnt add up, unless i'm missing something.

my page certainly contains the words "big" and "red" and "widget". nevertheless there are 600 pages ahead of it, many ranked lower or not ranked at all.

what am i missing here?

thanks in advance,
leanweb

In the Information for Webmasters [google.com] page Google writes:

Google's order of results is automatically determined by more than 100 factors, including our PageRank algorithm.

I suggest that you take a good look at Brett's Successful Site in 12 Months with Google Alone [webmasterworld.com] post. You will find many ideas to help you improve your ranking.
