Ranking Method

Seeing a pattern with google ranking.. Input please.

I manage well over 30 different domains. Some are new, some have been around for 5+ years.

I just downloaded the toolbar about 4 months ago maybe and I've noticed that my sites that have been around for years have high google ranking, ones that have been around half that time about a point or two different. Now the kicker... My new sites.. purchased about 2-3 months ago.. they all are at 0.

My question...

Does google toolbar take into consideration the time that the domain has been registered?

If this is not the case, can someone please help clarify what exactly google looks for when determining rank position for a web site.

What I know right now is that the higher the number the better. But why?

Do a forum search. No pages created in the past three months have pagerank. It has nothing to do with you.

Not quite right, steveb. The "PR display" function of the toolbar is simply not working quite right, last time I looked.

Some sites will have a bizarre (or inaccurate) number showing, others, not.

I would worry less about the green pixels, & more abou the performance of your sites in the search engine results page.

Google recently changed the way the page rank in the toolbar works, and it often shows PR0 for urls that it knows about, but has not indexed OR knows about and thinks is ranked 0 OR knows about the root domain but has never seen the page.

Also, ranks can be zero when there is a duplicate found: www.widget.com can have a PR4 and widget.com can have a PR0.

Do you have an example jeremy where a page created after April 15th shows an innaccurate rank? I've seen some pages with innacurate ranks but they always have a history prior to 4/15. All the pages I've seen created after 4/15 (or so) either show no rank or are some variation on?index1?gibberish where what used to be called guessed rank is shown.

:) We don't post urls in the forums, but just a few weeks ago, I could refresh on a friends site and see the PR meter fluctuate away. The site now has a more "stable" pagerank.

And, some other sites I have don't register pagerank -> but, you can find them in Google easily enough.

Hence my caution about not fixating on it so much...PageRank or Toolbar PageRank display does not equal Google ranking success.

I was responding to your bit about "they don't have PageRank" actually, they just don't display pagerank in the toolbar. Whether or not they actually have pagerank, only Google knows if they've completed their calculations or not.

jcoronella - The following is a myth and is not true. If widget.com has a PR0, then it just has no links in. (try it)

1. Just wait 1-3 months for your new pages (not sites) to show up as not zero.
2. Pages at level 1 or 2 in your site can rank #1 in SERP with PR0.

Thanks for all the input so fast! Thanks for welcoming me. Im sure I have a lot of questions to ask as I am about 4 months into the field of SEO services and such.

I've noticed today that widget.com and www.widget.com will deliver different page rank results. To my disadvantage it was right after I informed my employer that the sites don't have PR. Now I must correct that.. whoops!

One thing that wasn't made clear in the repsonces was, "What determines page rank". Pearl mentioned links, I assume this is regular links, links off site and recipicle links. Are there other things considered for ranking as well?

Again, thanks for the fast responces and I'll be reading future posts on the subject.
