Hello,
I have somewhat limited "lingo" experience, so please reply like I'm a total dummy. I completed work on my site about a week ago. Yahoo! picked me up first and then google, and today, aol and others. I am in the top ten results for many of my keywords and #1 for several (google and yahoo and aol indexed me the same, didn't get to check the rest) but when I visit my site the google tool bar doesn't show any page rank (no green, all gray). When I query google for my URL it comes up with no result. How can this be with such high rankings? Is it because I am so new?

Google is apparently in the middle of a massive change/update to their algo and spam filters. The toolbar hasn't been operating as it has previously, so don't worry. General thoughts are that things will be operating correctly anywhere from a week to a month from now.

My PR7 site went grey bar for the last three weeks, but still stayed #1.

Just to let you know that the page rank had not been working on my toolbar for about 4 months. Despite trying all the suggestions from the WebmasterWorld discussions nothing seemed to work. Then, bingo, this morning it's suddenly back up and running again.

Welcome to WebmasterWorld [webmasterworld.com] jpell!

Sounds like freshbot found your site if you just finished up in the past week. Don't be alarmed if you drop out of the index after a few days when your pages are no longer considered "fresh" as it's normal.

Your site is new, so you're PR hasn't been calculated yet. The gray bar may turn white, but not to worry. It's been happening to me with new pages lately.

Once your site is deep crawled it should be included in the index, in the past that was usually a month or two. But with the recent changes, it's hard to say how long it'll take. Too many unknown factors right now.

Probably a good time to submit to DMOZ and some of the other directories. ;)

Why recommend DMOZ when all the submissions I did there came up as 500 server error. They don't have enough money to fix their stuff. Not even 1 explaination about what is going on, what are the plans, nothing. You can only go there to get that 500 in the face every day. Like you should be happy even something comes up. Editors keep on saying the "team" is fixing the directory and installing new "equipement" and I keep on seeing NO RESULTS for months. You either install it or not. Don't BS me around you are doing something when it's obvious nothing is happening. And since last September all is going DOWN not up! What does that tell you?

As they are going through changes and upgrades at present, you are getting 550 errors. So if you can't submit, then no-one else can either. This might seem bad, but it also means that with no newly submitted sites, the 60,000 editors can get up to date with all of the unreviewed sites.

As a result, when DMOZ it is up and running, your site will probably get reviewed quite quickly by an editor.

I'd keep checking DMOZ to check when the problems have been sorted, and submit as soon as possible ensuring that your site adheres to their guidelines.

I believe DMOZ is very important to G, and one thing I always recommend people do as part of getting listed.

Because I feel that a DMOZ listing is well worth the effort and time it takes to submit and get listed.

"Not even 1 explaination about what is going on, what are the plans, nothing."

You mean besides the 1000+ posts on this topic in the Webmasterworld Directories forum alone?

You gotta get out more.

For a while, I was really down on DMOZ. I had incorrectly assumed that Google wasn't synching with DMOZ because of the ODP "upgrades." However, they were still producing the RDF dump all along.

I keep watching the Google directory to see if I am listed in the directory as I am on DMOZ....but the wait continues. What I do know is that in my business category Google places a huge emphasis on DMOZ entries. The top three Google pages in my category are all linked and associated with DMOZ. And to stay on topic here...the level of PR bar most certainly is influenced by a DMOZ listing.

The reason I became a DMOZ editor was that I was wringing my hands every day wondering what that damn green DMOZ directory link meant under the Google searches. After reading and more reading and...joining this site, my dense head is finally "getting it."
