No cache match

I have been puzzling about this one for over a year now...my client's site has a grey bar home page which does not appear in SERPS (if it's penalised, it's for no reason I can work out - it's completely clean), but its internal pages all have PR 5 and do very well in the SERPS. However, none of the pages in the index have been cached - clicking on the Toolbar 'cached snapshot' or the 'cache' link in the SERPS just brings back a 'no match' page.

Is Google encountering a technical problem when trying to cache my pages or is this related to what seems to be a penalty? I don't understand why my home page might be penalised but other pages not.

Appreciate any help - have learned so much from this forum.

mojo_jojo,

Welcome to WebmasterWorld [webmasterworld.com]!

I'd suggest carefully reviewing a few points:

  • Are there any cache-control tags in the <head> section of the problem page?

  • Is there a robots control meta-tag in the <head> section of the problem page?

  • Is there a file called "robots.txt" in the Web root directory of the site? Does it allow spiders to access the problem page?

  • Are the server response codes normal - 200-OK for each page? (Use the tool here [webmasterworld.com] to check)

  • Are there plain-text html links from each page which is OK back to the home page?

  • Are there links on other Web sites pointing to the problem page?

  • Are there any links on the problem page pointing to "bad neighborhoods" - link farms, FFA pages, etc.?

Just a few thigs to look at - there are many issues which could cause problems, but these came to mind.

    HTH,
    Jim

Thanks for your thoughtful response. I have checked and re-checked all of the areas you mention more than once over the last year:
    - no cache-control or robots tags
    - robots.txt is fine
    - server response code 200 OK
    - all indexed pages link back to home page in plain text (have tried linking to /index.htm and to absolute domain, doesn't make any difference)
    - there are plenty of links to the home page, some even PR4+
    - no external links on the home page at all

There was a time 18 months or so ago when the site, home page and all, had a PR of 6. And the PR on the home page briefly reappeared at 5 a few months ago, only to disappear again a month later.

The ODP has recently updated its listing for this site from .co.uk to .com, though Google still lists all pages under .co.uk - could this be relevant?
