University of Michigan Freaking Out Over Google Desktop Use

I just received an IM from a friend at U of M. Apparently the university IT department is up in arms about U of M employees using Google Desktop and has asked all employees to uninstall the application for security reasons.

Just wondering, how much does Google know about the data on my computer with desktop installed? Is Google going to far in their quest to control *all* data and will this be their downfall in the end?
