Buying several domains vs. subdomains/directories

Would buying several domain names be worth it,or will sub-domains do?

Would purchasing 100 domain names, for example, increase the site's earning potential significantly, in other words, would a site called "e-good-widgets.com" do much better in terms of search engine rankings than a site (with the exact same content) called "www.mydomain.com/good-widgets"

Is it worth it to purchase 100 domains, does it produce better results than just buying one and creating subdomains or separate sections for the 100 sites?Do 100 sites like "category1.com"/"category2.com"/.../"category 100.com" appeal more to search engines that 100 websites, with the same content, called "www.mydomain.com/category1"/.../"www.mydomain.com/category100" or "www.category1.mydomain.com"/.../"www.category100.mydomain.com"

I don't think so, but you could try with 5 domains and after two months you will see what is happening.

If you cannot get all of your pages to get indexed in MSN and Yahoo it would help especially with MSN since MSN has habit to index about 100 pages from the site.
