all the results link to the home page.
when i viewed the source for the home page i found that they have got an H1 tag with around 12 keywords in it and the font size has been reduced to around 8 / 9pt.
surely these are bad techniques and will get found out sooner than later?
one of our competitors seems to be position one on most serach engines for the majority of the key phrases linked with our business.
Hmmm, they must have a good SEO on their team. ;)

No problem there. Although 12 keywords might be a little overkill, there is nothing inherently wrong.

Not at all. It may be bad implementation but that is all based on opinion. If an opening headline requires 12 words, then 12 words it is. I typically try to keep them down to 3-7 words and treat them just like <title> Elements.
It literally is just a list of keywords, they dont form a sentence or anything.
Now that is a different perspective. A primary heading element (<h1>) is used to describe the content of the page. If it is a list of keywords with no rhyme or reason, then yes, it may be a case of bad practice in regards to how the element's usage is suggested.
Would it cause any major issues? Probably not. Does it raise a flag? If I saw it on a manual review, yes, it would raise a flag. But, I'd have to look at other areas too and see if the same pattern were repeated.
Keep in mind there are many out there who believe that stuffing keywords and phrases into various elements is the way to do SEO. In a past life, that might have been the case. Things have changed a bit since then. ;)
