I have myself for the last two months been creating and submitting articles to the free articles sites including my website address with each and over this time have been successfully seeing my articles being incorporated into other peoples websites.

Currently i am only receiving around 50 hits per day earning around $2 to $3 per day on average.

My questions:

Is this route im taking to gaining useful incoming traffic going to bring me more traffic in the future or am i wasting my time using this method to gain increased traffic to my website?

And if not, is there any other useful ways i can successfully bring traffic to my site?

I understand that using traffic exchanges like traffic swarm is against the google adsense TOS (nearly got meself banned).

My site is a blog, so i cannot create a web links page to swap reciprocal links with other sites and ive heard that having loads of high quality incoming only links is more beneficial to your site than having reciprocal ones.

I know that Rome wasnt built in a day, and i may be looking to wait more months just adding quality content before seeing results.

But, any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I have found that for a blog a good way to get traffic is to get involoved in the blogging community related to your blog. Try to find other blogs that are similar to yours, start reading them, and add the ones you like to your blog roll and feedreader. When you feel inclined to do so make comments on these blogs. Usually there is an option to add a link to your blog or website. I don't do it often but almost every time I post a comment on another blog I get a few poeple visiting my blog from that comment. Some of these people end up becoming regular readers. This is a good way to not only get traffic but to network. I have met many people at networking events who said they have never met me before but recognized my name because they have read my blog.

Another way to get a lot of traffic to a blog is to just use your existing network. I know a lot of people who have just sent out an e-mail to all thier contacts telling them that they have started blogging. They usually get an instant following since these are people that know the blogger personally and want to hear what he has to say.

After you have created a blogroll it may be a good idea to notify all the blog owners that you have added them to your blogroll, they are then very likely to add your blog to thier blogroll.

I wouldn't call it "only".
$50 per thousand impressions is very OK.

Articles are good. And here's a great post on link building [webmasterworld.com] that might be helpful also.
