How to exclude portions of a page from search engines

Is there an acceptable convention for this?

Is it possible to use some kind of "no index" script to direct search engines not to spider a section of code in a web page?

It is important that the search engines can access the page so I can't include the page in a robots.txt file as I don't want to exclude it altogether.

no there isn't.

why don't you use an iframe and stick the content you don't want spiderdd in there?
