Domain Forwarding

Question: Let's say I have a domain that is part of a franchise...the franchise is a tanning salon.

Let's say I have on domain name ultratan.com and I have a mainsite called denverultratantanning.com because I want to get a specific location (for example denver) and word (tanning) into the main website domain name.

So the main website is: denverultratantanning.com but for brevitys sake, the address I give out publicly is ultratandnv or something similar and have that forward to the other site. What role...positive or negative, will the play in indexing and results?

I have a similar question regarding forwarding of domains, which also relates to franchising like this case. if you've got a successful site already at xyz.com but you are now going to franchise, but only have one website, is it OK to purchase:
xyzdenver.com
xyzboston.com
xyznewyork.com
etc, and have them all forward to xyz.com? or this this considered spamming? i assume though that creating seperate but identical sites for each of them is also a no-no?

Anyone had experiences in this area?
