My website is new.

I have chosen some keyphrases for which i will try to optimize in google.

So, how do i start?

a) Search in google the keyphrase and note the top websites in the search results .
b) Check the PR of these webpages .
c) Check the number of back links to these websites.

But to analyse the website .. so that i can know that these websites are better than the others for that particular keyphrase ......... and i will try improving mine ......

the only answer imho is "read a lot" ... before you take action :-)

in here and elsewhere ...

When your existing site is indexed .. check its rankings manually against test phrases - look at the sites on page 1 and 2 ..

Oh and perhaps best not to pick very competitive phrases to learn on because as you change your site its more likely that many others will be changing theirs so you may see much more movement because of others changes than your own.

Some of the tasks required can be so boring as to send you to sleep on your keyboard but the results can be more fun!

I volunteer with a global non-profit and when they ask me that, the first thing I always tell them is to start tweaking their title tags and anchor text. Once you have your keyword list, start working the keywords in to those 2 areas, as well as in the text if you can. Once you've done that, then while you get links for your site, you can read up and learn more about SEO.
