Proposed SEO Guild

I'm curious if any of you here have been following OptWizard's post on SEF regarding forming an SEO guild. I've been one of the more vocal critics of it simply because of what I see as the potential for abuse, but I'd be interested in hearing what some of the more established SEO here [ie: "the crusties"] have to say about it.

Personally, I don't think there's much interest here. And that thread at SEF is probably the best place to let the pros/cons continue to air themselves. We have several members and even moderators that have been involved in long-standing efforts to provide some sort of SEO association -without any great success so I'm told.

I agree with rc - we're all pretty much leaving that one alone. With all the different methods and secrets out there combined with the many differen levels of talent I personally believe it's a pretty impossible task. It's a nice idea to want to educate the SEO consumer but I think there other ways to do that more effectively - like this forum for example.

I feel better having heard that. I was envisioning some kind of central authority overseeing all of us and wasn't happy with the way I thought it might develop. Looks like I probably don't have much to worry about. Thanks for the input.

Most of the individuals that are pushing for some type of centralized organization, are either:

1. New in the game and want the playing field leveled a bit.
2. Used to be in the game, and haven't kept up with the technology (See Paul Bruemmer's (Web Ignite) article over at Clickz.com), so they want the SE's to make it "fair" for everyone.. (Give me a break...) :)

Let me put it this way, I know a few fairly high-end SEO types that aren't exactly rushing to sign up.

Am I qualified to write my thoughts on this one? ;)

When I first started SEO, I thought about this kind of idea, because wow, wouldn't it be a great help. Now, I think that an organized body would actually be a burden, because having enough experience to know how to do a trick or too, and having to learn it "on your own" teaches you to be pretty resourceful.

And this forum is incredible. Having access to this place, as well as coworkers, I feel like there isn't a single question I could come up with and not get the perfect answer, if one exists.

So I would advise anyone interested in forming this group to just participate in the forums they like. For me, I can't imagine anything better.

Cheers,
Han Solo

AlgoGuild.com - will it have a "gut call" or "just winging it" section?
