Titles: How similar is too similar?

Possible Penalty?

Does anyone have an opinion on Title Similarity on important pages on a site?

For instance, say your most important keyphrase is Blue Tool Widgets. Would the following titles be considered too similar and possibly enable the site to become penalized by Google for duplicate content? Or, would the following titles be ok because technically, they are all different?

Blue Tool Widgets - Widgeting.com (index page)
Blue Tool Widgets - History - Widgeting.com
Blue Tool Widgets - News - Widgeting.com
Blue Tool Widgets by Widgeting.com
Blue Tool Widgets

The reason I ask, is because my page titles are somewhat similar to these. I ranked really good for "Blue Tool Widgets" up until recently. I'm thinking I may have suffered a small page penalty because of my titles. Sound possible? The index page seems to be the only page that has dropped, went from #6 to #22.

Kstprod, this sounds more like the index page issue that many are experiencing. Those titles shouldn't be a problem penalty-wise.

Thanks roger. I am in the middle of that particular index page problem. I just thought this could be a possible explanation as to why. This is making me nuts and making me question every nook and cranny of each of my pages. :)
