I was curious how to get high rankings in msn in a highly competitive search (refinance) Please let me know ... I beleive it is looksmart but am unsure and additionally heard that looksmart didnt have bid for placement so I was wondering how you got higher in the rankings.

Thanks in advance,

Portals like MSN, AOL and Yahoo use data from other companies.

More general information about improving your ranking in MSN can be found in the Need help optimizing for MSN! [webmasterworld.com] thread.

Your keyword (refinance) sounds commercial, so Zeal won't be an option to get into Looksmart for free. For a recent thread about Looksmart: Looksmart - Dead Directory Walking?

You could always spend money with Overture and go the sponsored listings route!

as far as I know msn is a combintation of looksmart and inktomi.

For the most popular keywords there is usually a tonne of looksmart listings above the inktomi listings.

For the less competitive phrases it may not have any looksmart listings at all - these are really good ones to target if you are going to pay to get into inkomi.

I have paid to have 5 pages indexed in inktomi but after a few months they picked up over 50 other pages for free.

I've used looksmart but I was not impressed - I couldn't even use up my monthly budget. I highly doubt I'll use them again.

Refinance? You couldn't have picked a more competitive term! ;)

You will be up against special circumstances in this case. With LS, there are special packages available to advertisers with deep pockets. With Ink, you've got the Trusted Feed program to contend with. My understanding is that with Trusted Feed, you are going to be competing with many cloaked pages.

If budget permits, you should check into those programs offered by LS and Ink for just this scenario. Typically a LS directory listing and a well optimized Ink page do well. When you get into highly competitive industries, it is a completely different ball game. Play ball!

I have a basic paid Looksmart listing that gives me a number one placement in MSN on a search using two key phrases, "my region" "web consultant", in that order and both in quotes. "my region" is actually the name of my target market. Interestingly enough, if you reverse the two phrases or miss any of the quotes, I don't appear.

This account has produced the same result for 14 months, despite Looksmart's caveat that they do not necessarily guarantee a good ranking. Incidentally, I have attracted customers through this listing.
