This is both a design and SE issue, so pageoneresults & agerhart please feel free to move...

Has anyone got experience of current SE practise wrt using text/links set to the same colour as the page background?

I ask not as a spam technique (old hat), but because we have web sites with links/text written in white within a table cell with a coloured background. However the page background is also white.

What happens if the <body> tag contains no bgcolour? I guess a SE will assume it is defaulting to white anyhow...

to clarify...

The colours used are defined using CSS, either inline or external file link. There are no font tags in the actual html page.

Just wanted to know if the SE's in general are clever enough to pick up the colours from the CSS...

I see a lot of pages in Google which try to spam with that old hat, but Google doesn't seem to care very much. But I'd be very carefully with it, because you'll never know what the next Google update will bring.

Thinking about it, there are lots of instances where white text is used within pages - for example webmasterworld has a table row with white text (Novell also in their nav bars). So either the SE's are clever enough to know this is not a deliberate spam technique, or they don't care. I have a feeling it is the latter...
