ASP or .NET?

Has classic ASP now become obsolete by .NET?

Hi,

I'm about to undertake my final year University project, as part of this i'll be comparing two server side technologies and building web apps in both. I was wondering whether to include classic ASP as part of this or use .NET? Is ASP still widely used? Or is it being used less and less and .NET taking over? I'm just trying to establish which would be more worthwhile to spend an entire year researching into.

Thanks, any help appreciated.

ASP is not obsolete although .NET is widely used.

.NET is more comprehensive than ASP, but both will be around for a good long time.

I suppose the biggest difference is that there is rarely a reason to upgrade to ASP.NET from ASP. Especially when companies already have a functional ASP site, there is no reason to upgrade the technology. From a developers standpoint, as long as you have the time to learn either language, ASP.NET I would imagine would yield better results for the developer. Though not necessarily true for the end product.

One of the neat things you can do in your project is demonstrate the interop features of .net and show how it can run side by side with your asp stuff and also communicate with your com stuff.

If you are intending to be a IT professional when you graduate then it would not make sense to do a final year project using classic ASP. Use the opportunity to learn something with a real skills demand VB,JAVA,SQL,Perl etc.
