hi all,
i am using windows IIS server for my website and i want to redirect a URL of a page. i read on the webmaster forum that 301 is the best option to redirect the pages and retaining the ranking at search engines.
I don't know how to redirect on IIS server, i know 301 redirect can be done using .htaccess file on Unix.
what is the method of 301 permanent redirect for IIS?

thanks
Navdeep

In internet services manager, right click on the file or folder you wish to redirect. Select the radio titled "a redirection to a URL". Enter the redirection page, check "The exact url entered above" and the "A permanent redirection for this resource". Click "Apply".

Viola!

Will this work if you have multiple domains redirecting to one IP? Meaning I have 3 domains pointing to one IP and I only want the search engines to see one of them?

jaanis - yes you need to set up three seperate sites in your IIS manager and use this method to redirect two of them to the other one.

sorry to bring up an older post again but I am having some issues with this topic.

I have 3 domains all going to the same IP address as well as the same port how can I get IIS to redirect this. I tried what was suggested above but had no luck with the redirections.

Can you provide a little more info on how your sites are configured in IIS?

No luck for me as yet either. I did the redirection and the engines are still seeing the old domain eveen after a update.

301s can take anywhere from 4 to 12 weeks to take effect. I always tell my clients 12 weeks.

Someone here (synergy maybe?) reported 10 weeks not long ago for his domain.

I was not talking about a 301. I am talking about a redirection in IIS manager.

4-12 weeks wow I didn't think it would be that long. maybe that is what I have to wait for.

as for the IIS setup

domain1.com
domain2.org
domain3.gov

are all in IIS manager and d1 and 2 should point to d3.

I am talking about a redirection in IIS manager.

Well, that's either a 302 or a 301 depending on whether you have the "permanent redirection for this resource" box checked or not.

Jaanis, are you saying that the redirection isn't working at all or just that the search engines haven't picked it up yet?
