DNS on windows 2003 server

Ive just setup a windows 2003 server. Its using example.local as its domain and so are all of the other computers on the network. I chose to let it configure the server automatically when I first installed it. It made the Forward lookup zones:
_msdcs.example.local
example.local

And no Reverse lookup zones.

What I want to do is be able to forward my new domain example.ca to this server. I will also be using exchange 2003 server on here so I want this server as the name server and everything. How should I setup the forward lookup zone example.ca?

Open up DNS, select the server and right click on forward lookup zones - there should be a create a new zone option.

I tried that. But what i dont understand is what to do from there. MY isp wants a name server and ip. so do i give them ns1.example.ca after i make it under example.ca forward lookup zone?

How ive been doing it is making a new host called exampleserver and ns1 and one with no name so it will be the same as the parent folder. I make their ip's XXX.86.10.71. Then i change the name server to ns1.example.ca under example.ca forward lookup zone. Still nothing.

people also cant access the site by entering XXX.86.10.71, maybe this problem is related? im not behind a hardware firewall. How do i open up access with the windows server?

First thing I would do is check that the outsite world can ping the server.

Then get the default website set up and running.

With the DNS once you have a zone set up

e.g. example.ca

then you can create A records for the domain within your zone. If you create an A record ns1.example.ca, once you have created your nameserver A record you will need to contact your domain registrar and change the primary nameserver for the domain to ns1.example.ca

I have made the record ns1.example.ca. I can do nslookups and ping ns1.example.ca and it shows the right address (the external ip) and I can also go to example.ca all from within the LAN and it works. Unfortunately I still cant even ping the server externaly, or access the web site from ip or example.ca. Does windows 2003 server block ports by default? I read on the internet there was a way to open ports in the registry. I realy wanted to do it through some sort of management feature. Any ideas as to why I cant even ping it?

Thanks alot.

ok if i go to routing a remote access / Trimoon WAN properties and uncheck enable a basic firewall i can ping it and access the web site externally. However i still dont understand how to get my new domain to forward to my computer from the place I regitered my domain. should ns1.example.ca show up in a nslookup on the ip externally even though the domain example.ca isnt working yet?

Im confused as to if i should talk to my domain registrar or if i should look into my configuration on my machine at this point.

You will need to get the DNS server changed at the registrar.

When you register a domain it will set up the DNS servers - if you then want to change these you will need to do it at the same place that you registered the domain.
