Starting .NET development

Do I need Visual Studio .NET?

hi ya,

I want to do some .NET development but don't have a release version of VS.NET (only a beta). However, the download for .NET Framework SDK Version 1.1 says all you need is there to create a .NET application. I assume it doesn't have a wyswyg thing like VS.NET, but is it relatively easy to make programs with?

Are you looking at creating windows or ASP.Net applications? If it is ASP.Net then you should use webmatrix if you are not going to use VS.Net. You can get that for free at www.asp.net.

I would recommend using visual studio.net. Your are much more productive with such an IDE, then using notepad.

The compiler for windows apps in the framework is command line like Java and it is basically just a compiler.

You can get tons of information on www.ASP.net site. I would especially take a look at the IBuySpy tutorials. If you don't have the cash to get VS Studio.Net then WebMatrix is a great alternative and is actively being supported.
