IE image save jpe

On IE6/WinXP I noticed that when doing a "Save Picture As" on an JPEG image, in the Save Picture window, it lists in the File name text field the file name with an extension of ".jpe" instead of ".jpg" or even ".jpeg," i.e. "filename.jpe" Is there a reason it does this and is there any way I can have it by default give an extension of .jpg?

I also noticed in the cache all of the jpeg images have the extension of ".jpe" Does that mean those images are not being reused since it has an unrecognizable extension?

Hey luoifong, we're NOT ignoring you! Honest! Welcome to WebmasterWorld! :)

I don't have a clue about your question, but I moved it to this forum in hopes that one of the regulars might have some ideas.

Hey,

As far as I know, they are all the same thing and recognized as the same thing. In setting up your default files, I believe you will see jpg, jpeg & also jpe.

luoifong,
I was able to dig up a little info here-
h*tp://filext.com/detaillist.php?extdetail=JPE
and also here-
h*tp://www.icdatamaster.com/j.html

Basically it is just a mime type for a jpg.

I had actually forgotten about this post...I had posted it and then not seeing any quick replies I moved on to some other things I was working on. I just remembered today. Thanks for the responses.

For some reason I was thinking that when I saved it with a .jpe extension I couldn't open the image b/c the extension wasn't recognized. But I can't seem to recreate the problem. Oh well.

One question though...IE6/WinXP tries to save the image with a default extension of .jpe. Is there any way to change the default extension to .jpg so that whenever I save a JPEG from the internet it automatically gives an extension of .jpg? And I'm talking about in the "File name:" field. The "Save as type:" is listed as JPEG (*.jpg), but in the File name field I am given a default of "filename.jpe"

Thanks for the replies!

I should say (from my last post) that I didn't remember I had posted this question...I was reminded. Thanks DaveAtIFG for the welcome and the reminder!
