looking for a good text editor...

Got a bit fed up of using notepad/simpletext and am looking for the next step in text editors.
I have tried a few: texturizer, phpedit, ultraedit, etc.

I would like colour coding for at least html,css,javascript and php and anything else is a bonus.Oh and line numbers.

Is there anything anyone would recommend?

Take a look at TopStyle. It's a full fledged XHTML editor with incredible CSS support. Coded by the guy who made HomeSite.

I use Crimson Editor, it's free, very fast to load, has syntax highlighting for html, css, php, asp, java, perl, jsp etc. It has line numbers too and other handy features like tabs and find & replace for all open files.

Another thread here recommended ultraedit and I switched in September of last year, and haven't looked back.

I use conText and jEdit. Both free and both great. jEdit has possibly the nicest interface I have seen.

Sorry to bring back an old topic but I thought I would add my oppions and pose a question at the same time...

Until recently I would have said Crimson Editor but it has completely screwed up all my file associations and icons etc twice now so I am looking for alternatives.

I have tried JEdit but theyve removed the launcher that there was in previous versions so I cant find a simple way of associating files with it.

Im still looking for a basic, tabbed, editor with PHP, HTML and CSS colouring. It also needs to be free and for Windows. Any suggestions? - I've checked out most of the above.

I've just moved on to Crimson - which has so far been really good.
what do you mean by screwed up your file association and icons? do you mean that that stupid dog icon is next to your .php .js .htm , etc. files?

Yes i do mean that stupid dog icon was on. But the problem was changing it back using every method I could think of wouldn't work. It seemed very persistent. It may just have been something I did but im currently trying out HAPedit. By all means use Crimson as it is a great program, just those were the problems I myself had.

If you use winXP and you right click a file, select > open with... , choose a program and check always use this program to open this type of file - it will put the icon next to that type of file.
I havn't had crimson change any icons without me asking it to.
I have to admit the only thing I can fault crimson on is that icon.

after starting this thread, I tried most of these and used HTML-kit for a good few weeks - but I think crimson editor is better.
It has a few features that I prefer.
