I'm very new to the web developemtn world. My question is how long is reasonable amount of time that FP should take in minutes to publish (non ftp). Does FP go through each file to find if there are any FP extensions before publishing? Thanks in advance.

The time will depend on the number of pages in the site and the speed of the connection, among other things. You should see a progress bar as the files are being uploaded.

In my experience, a large Web (say, of 1,000 pages or more) will sometimes appear to hang after the files have uploaded and the "processing updates" box appears. When that happens, I just click the cancel button and bail out. (It's a benign error--the site has finished publishing; it just appears to be frozen.)

Takes mine about 4-5 minutes the last time I did every page--165--changed copyright date last week. Connection is interesting. I always thought a dialup would be slow, but I really don't see much of a difference as I've done both(cable)
