I use UltraEdit32 daily... but I drool over MultiEdit ;) just can't seem to justify the cost.

I have used TextPad and liked it. I have also used arachniphilia (liked it less). For WYSIWIGs I liked DreamWeaver OK and didn't like FP98 at all. My current Text Editor is HTML Kit and I love it!
I do agree that it is a good idea to be familiar will plain vanilla notepad.
