I need some advice. I am not an expert in Frontpage or MS Access but I have been able to operate an Access driven Frontpage designed site with little trouble for about six months. Last weekend, my web hosting company had a server go down (mine) and they fixed it after a few hours. No big deal, but now my sight has developed a mined of its own. At times everything is fine but less and less so. Today the shared boarders disappeared and I’m getting this message about 90% of the time:
Database Results Error
The operation failed. If this continues, please contact your server administrator.
I have uploaded the entire site twice since last week from known “good” copies. I have contacted their support line three times and my problem has been “elevated” but no resolution or message. I have emailed them once with no response.
If my site is changing daily “shored boarders disappearing and the reappearing” and my database works intimately without me doing anything to the site, could this be a problem on their end?
I know this is not a lot to work with and I’m not looking for specifics. It just seems to me that if I do nothing and my site changes on its own or opens the database intermittently it must be something on their end. What do you think? Has this every happened to you? Is there anything I can tell the tech people other than the site don’t work?
Should I start looking for another Host? I like these guys and I have never had a problem before, but I’m beginning to lose my patience.
Is there an automated way on the web to check my site? Maybe I have lost my mind. However, I have another site under the same plan that has worked fine through all of this, even the multiple uploads.
Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.
Confused and worried…
I received an email saying my default.asp was incorrect (I haven’t changed the file since I set it up months ago) and that my db files were in the wrong location (they have always been in the same location.) So the customer rep moved them to a new location, modified me default file and gave me a lecture about who’s responsibility it was to fix these problems (not his).
About half of the site worked for about an hour (about 75 of the 150 pages that us the db.) and then the site went down again.
I sent back an email pointed out that the site was down again; I was sorry for asking him to look at my site and it was strange that all my shortcoming became apparent after they had transferred my site to a new server. Oh, and I suggested he check out your suggestion. Who knows, it could be something on their end…
While I was on their FAQs trying to solve this problem myself I saw that this company has 3.1 million paying customers. I guess I should have been happy with any response. Anyway, I have spent the last few hours trying to find another web host to send my $12.95 per month to.
One thing the world truly needs is an honest websites that compares web hosting companies. If I had the abilities and time to make honest comparisons, I would make a killing off adsense/affiliate marketing. Not one of the “review” sites I visited offered anything close to an objective review. They were all borderline fanatics for whoever was advertising on their site.
Does anyone out there know of a site that does honest comparisons? Please sticky me…
Explain to them when a server goes down your asp files don't suddenly change.
They have defo put some kind of updates / changed some configuration on the server thats affecting your website..

How would they pay their bandwidth? ...How would they not recommend their own hoster as best? Catch 22 ;)
BTW ..it's not because the site says they have 3.1 million customers that they do ...
I had a customer that was originally hosted by an outfit that claimed to be on the west coast of the USA run by geeks and made in response to their own lousy experiences elsewhere ..they quoted 24 hr responses ... ( constant problems ..no stats ..and customer ticket system that allways came back with bad english and "we will have to refer this to the tech people ...their auto responder did indeed send messages within 24 hours saying your being dealt with ..their actual response time was nearerto 3 weeks to actually give their excuses ..and he never did get his 30 money back guarranteed refund ...!".
In reality they rented a low end server with limited bandwidth from a major server renter in texas..
Were and still are run via a UK ltd company which is actually the front for a one man outfit run by a guy in Greece ..who is the entire "team"...I suspect he may even be on Dial-up ..;)
I can tell you even worse about a french guy for whom I used to translate and troubleshoot servers in the USA ( cos he undesrstood no English ) ..Looked from his website to be an outfit with hundreds of employees and to be one of the biggest in France ...his hotline like all those in France cost around 50$cts per minute to talk to when anything went down and he actually had cds of voices talking "techy" and seeming to "respond" to hundreds phone calls that played in the background when he picked up the phone..gave the impression that you were dealing with AT&T...
One guy in a small appartement ...
He also hosted IRC facilities , crackers and hackers , warez and pron and chat rooms on his servers ( they..the hackers spent most of the time taking down each others machines! ) and of course the others who were on the machines went down too ...
He disappeared when the French and US server companies pulled the plug for non payment of his monthly rental ..he howevr had already been paid for all his "yearly hosting plans" ...
Also used to insist to french customesr that all domain names be paid for for ten years ( he offered 10% discounts for this )..he bought on for 1 year and kept the names registered to himself ..new squat about server security and even ran his own machine on millenium and using a cracked copy of Norton AV....
When I discovered all this I obviously dropped him like he was radioactive ( just before he dissapeared )..I suspect that the lack of someone to let him know what was going on on his rented machines may have prompted his shutdown ..he still owes me a bunch o money ..(.we eat our revenge cold in Ireland..so no sweat ;) ...
Another french outfit that I was translating for at the same time who really are big thought he was the same size as them ..( they got this from that fact that servers in the US are only 25% of the french price so he was "discounting" compared to the prices here and fooled everyone into thinking he must be as big as rackshack in the US or something ) ...
Moral of the story ..out here nothing is what it seems ;)
