I've had a programmer help me make my website and I noticed there are various things I would like to change on my own. Is there a way I can download or copy my website from the web into frontpage so I can edit certain things on my own? How could I do this and save the changes? Will frontpage change around the code on its own if I do this? (change it around for the worst?)

It would be best if you could coordinate your efforts with the programmer that did your site. A lot would depend on whether he used any dynamic languages such as PHP. Front Page is a fine tool but it's not meant for editing someone else's work unless you really know what you are doing. Of course if you have a strong desire to learn anything is possible.:)

I thought I heard that you could download a website into frontpage and see how the code was made and what they were doing to make the site..etc... Am I wrong? I just want to put the code into frontpage and look at the big picture, fix some things that I think could be fixed, and put it back on the web with the changes I made? Is it that difficult to do?

No, you are not wrong. Open FrontPage, go to File > Import > Select the Import Web Wizard > Select Location to Import to and then go from there.

Depending on how the original web was set up will determine which files you are able to import to your system.

Not at all. The problem is, will the changes you make keep the existing web intact? If not, you may want to confer with the original designer to make sure you don't interfere with what they are doing.

Will frontpage change around the code on its own if I do this?

Depending on how your FrontPage is configured (Page Options, etc.) will determine on whether or not FP overwrites the programmers code.

The import feature sometimes does not work all that well.

If you create a folder on your computer for your new website and then open that folder up via FP, it should ask you to convert it to a FP web. Choose yes. Now close that one & open up your FP website vai FP - File -> Open Web -> [example.com...] and enter your user name / password. Choose publish & publish to your local folder.

if you are using FP 2000 - I would not open up any ASP / PHP programs. FP 2002 is OK for ASP / PHP, but not really .NET

You can download it to your hard drive and then open it with FP. Your HD is where you would want to do your editing anyway.

If it works ok on your HD, it should be fine on the host.

Before you publish back to the host make sure they have FP extensions installed.

If the other person is still publishing to the host it gets a little more complicated. Keep an unaltered copy of the site on your HD so you can FTP it back to the host if things don't work out.
