do you need design notes on for check in/out?

I can't remember, but I think someone once said design notes were a bad thing to use in your site for dreamweaver. So, my question is, are they needed for check in/out?

You can turn it off in the site setup. The only problem I know of is that it takes longer to ftp files as the software has to process the notes.
