Any data on how many search results pages are clicked

I read somewhere that in general, users only look at the first 1 to 2 (maybe 3) pages returned from a search engine.

If that is or is not the case, does anyone know if it came from a formal study and where it might be found?

New data states that 82% of users only look at the top seven results "above the fold listings".
