Any publicized information of ROI statistics?

I had a client ask me if there was any publicized information or research on PPC advertising. For example in the direct mail order world, there are average statistics on how many people you can expect to read the direct mail and respond to it, etc. Is there anything out there with similar figures for PPC? It would help clients get an idea on what they should expect with PPC. Or are there just too many variables?

I think that the market is too immature to have come up with meaningful statistics.

Everyone is still experimenting, and there are not enough players in each sector to have achieved a level of maturity that would mean that the statistics represent what is achievable rather than just the trial and error of the early adopters.

To get over this obstacle with clients I point out that they can get answers to all of their questions by running a carefully constructed trial with a low budget and proper conversion tracking. For £500 they can get real answers based on their business rather than accumulated industry statistics. If they cannot afford a £500 trial then they are probably not a client worth having.

Neil.
