Marketing a Novel

What are the best approaches to marketing a book online?

I have been approached by a couple of clients who are selling books. The first is a "cookbook with a theme", and the second is a murder mystery.

I have never marketed a book online, and I am wondering what the best options are. I am thinking that search engines aren't going to be of the usual benefit. Has anyone had experience marketing a SINGLE book online?

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Well I surpised at the lack of conversation on this subject. Especially since I imagine we have a at least a few published authors among us.

Anyhow, are you trying to increase the general sales of a book through merchants or are you trying to sell the book directly?

stuntdubl...I did some website work for a novelist who gave me his publishing company's marketing program for just this purpose. There is some good stuff in there...sticky me your regular email address and I'll send it to you (it's a pdf)

I'd think that the best way wouldn't really be search engines but other peoples sites getting it on CNN and Oparah Book Club :) If your searching for the book of course it should show up #1 but you need tons of PR on the net.

This is exactly the sort of resources that I am looking for. He is already listed on Amazon.com, and I am looking for other avenues for sales and promotion. I'm sure the website itself isn't extremely valuable from a "Reach" point of view. I am wondering mostly how to reach a broader base that is looking to buy this genre of book.

I was also hoping for more authors to speak out on how they approached marketing there book. Anyone have any good resource or sales affiliate links?

The author is pushing to negotiate a percentage of sales, to make it a beneficial endeavor for both of us.

If you do a search for "marketing on Amazon" on Google you should find some oppurtunties for getting your book more exposure on Amazon's various web properties. I believe Amazon has their own PPC or something similiar for publishers / manufacturers to promote their products.
