What to do when two subtopics intersect

How should we handle a theme pyramid where this is a heavy intersection between two low categories?

Let's say we have a pyramid

A
A1 A2
a1x a1y a1z a2q a2r a2s
a1xi a2ri

Let's say that the kw in a1xu and a2ri are matched, associated - people will search for those two together, those two appear together, etc.

How do we deal with this?

In general, if, for whatever reasons, the pyramid is going to have to split two strongly associated keywords, can we rejoin them? Can we link them horizontaly?

I think that it is fine to link horizontally like you have described, but I would link the two sparingly.

I have done this type of linking and had success on numerous occassions.
