I just received some newsletter from a site ran by another member here. I can duplicate from my little tests what they are telling about index sizes and quality.

Seems that some SE need to check a little more for dead links in the index. I find an average of 7% dead links when I validate 1K of first results using Copernik.

It seem that AV has worst numbers than this (almost double). I find Ink to be pretty fresh. I heard members telling that Google had dead links in the index for almost 9 months.

What glitch can happen to cause this on a SE crawling every month?
Do anyone have some good source of stats for index sizes and quality?

I think you have to be careful when judging "freshness", some SE's use smoke and mirrors to cover up their lack of freshness. Take Google for example, spidering major news sites every few hours does not mean they are constantly refreshing. Ink's paid for 48 hour refresh has the same effect.

Taking wisenut out of the equation [they are so out of date it's untrue] I think AV is probably doing the best job of constantly adding new content [they need to focus on getting the out of date stuff right though]. The worst, imo Fast are falling some way short of "all the web, all the time" and need to pick up the pace.
