From the Journal of Digital Information, a paper entitled Linking in Context from the Multimedia Group at the University of Southampton:

This paper explores the idea of dynamically creating links and employing them in context via an open link service in a way that would serve that goal. One of the failings of traditional information retrieval models is attributed to the isolation of queries from the context in which they occur [4].

Goals according to the overview:

1. The creation of links in context (via link extraction)
2. The propagation of links to users based on user interests (which within this work define user context)
3. The rendering of links based on document context

Thanks for the link Marcia, from what I glanced through it looks like a good read. I'll have to read it more thoroughly when I have the time.

I find myself taking advantage of sites that create contextual links that lead to another area that offers more indepth info.

There seems to be an overall negative attitude towards smart links but I think they have some good points as well.

How many times have you read some article and noticed a topical phrase that caught your interest only to have to open a new browser window to search for it on a search engine?
