How do you relocate a site without damaging ranking?

Changing a domain name that's already listed

I have a site that is already listed in various search engines using the basic web address given by my service provider (eg: www.username.provider.co.uk). Now that I have purchased a domain name, and new web space, I need to ensure that I keep as many of my current SE listings intact as possible.

I have read that using a 301 error code (Moved Permanently) could be one answer - but, if that's the case, how do I use it? Is it the same as the 404, ie: use the .htaccess file?

Any suggestions, or other solutions would be great :-)

Your web host should be able to point both domain names at the same site.

This Discussion [webmasterworld.com] covers that topic quite well.

i have several domains pointing at the same site. just make sure to submit only one of these sites, since the content and ip address is the same.
