Towards the end of last year (end of November) we put up a small highly themed site. The idea was for it to get listings for a small niche market, not too competitive, and drive traffic to our clients main site.
The site was spidered by google in about the middle of December and we got some good listings at the end of December. It has also been visited by Fast and we got a few listing there too.
Other spiders that have visited are, goo, scooter, and slurp, and WiseNut.
Ok we haven't paid for any of the PFP engines/spiders, so I'm not expecting any referers from them. But we have had nothing from FAST or Lycos and so far nothing from WiseNut.
Problem is if that although the client's got some nice enquiries that could only have been originally from this feeder site, if we don't start seeing some referrers from engines other than Google, I'm going to have a hard time explaining the hours spent optimising...
but I suppose as long as he gets enquiries, what he doesn't know won't kill him. :)
Can you explain this to a newbie? I don't understand at all what you mean. My site is relatively new, and google dominates the referrers. But without google, I'd have virtually no traffic! So why would I want to reduce my google traffic?

Basically if you can increase the numbers of visitors arriving at your site from other sources so that Google's percentage drops to a _relative_ 20% its a really good thing :)
You don't want all your eggs in one basket.
I too have the same problem with new sites - for the first few months at least, my google referrals run into the 60% region. Google is the quickest SE to return significant traffic the others do require more patience, and in some cases money.
