i am working in a site for a friend and am keen to get it ranked high in the search engines. what i am condidering doing is creating several homepages each exactly the same but with different mata tags i.e index.htm, index2.htm, index3.htm etc etc. each page would concentrate in a few keywords in the title description and keywords. there are about 15 usefull keywords for this site. would this be of assistance if i was to build about 5 homepages with each one concentrating in about 3 keywords. this would increase the keyword relevance but could this be concidered spammin???

over to the experts. :)

Yes.

There can technically only be one homepage, the index.htm page. The others are internal pages, and duplicate content will undoubtedly cause a problem. Remember about search engines doing full text indexing - with some, meta tags have no significance at all, only the page text, so different meta tags will have no effect.

You definitely don't want duplicate content, and it's best to emphasize one major search phrase per page, and establish linking between site pages using important keywords in text links.

Work on content development, create a good number of pages with unique content, meta tags and page titles on each, have a common theme running through them all, and emphasize one phrase per page.

Use your targeted keyword phrase for a page in a natural manner through the page text, keeping the density at a reasonable level, but especially in the first paragraph. Also use it in an H1-H6 tag on the page, at the top especially, and include it in the page title, meta description and meta keywords, for those search engines that do still consider them.

There are excellent articles and tutorials at SearchEngine World that cover everything you need to know, and then some!
