Search Engine and Dynamic Javascript Text

Can search engines read text that is rendered on the client by javascript once the page loads?

Or do they just look at the static text?

I know in the past they just pulled the static text.. didn't know if the techology was there to pre-render into some sort of browser like app (where the JS could load and run) then parse the documents DOM where the dynamic text would be available.
