So there I was already to part with 25 quidsworth, when I thought I would do some KW searches.
Being in a relatively non-competitive area it was still a pleasant surprise to be in the top five for some search terms. That was going direct to UK Goto.
I understood that Freeserve were going to use the Goto DB but they are still using the INK ifind.
Now am I missing something here but with No ISP's using GoTO as its SE yet, no advertising campaign to inform Sally and Simon Searcher, if you are looking for UK hits, might I be forgiven for thinking "who cares".
Other than you guys and my Cocker Spaniel (who prefers UK Plus) no one knows GoTo UK even exists.
Another minor point is that as it identifies which are paid sites does that not encourage unnecessary visits from potential competitors....at 5p per go as opposed to 1p in the US?

I feel goto will need to take a lesson from excite, I don't know what it's like in basildon (other than wet) but just about every where you look in portsmouth there is an advert for excite.

I recently asked some of my friends to name some search engines all came up with yahoo then AV/Excite/lycos and as far as google went most of my friends had thought I had reveted back to my childhood :)

When it comes to paying, my money is still with yahoo all of my clients that have taken my advice and paid to get in have seen great traffic and in fact some have even made some money from their web sites :)

Hi Tigger
Compared to some parts of the UK Basildon is Dry. It is very sad to see the devestation caused around the UK and in some cases (Ilford and Waltham Abbey) only 25-35 miles away.
I can't say that I've seen too much in the way of Ads for Excite but the famous Essex Pages are on hoardings and buses all over the County yet I have zero referals.
Being only interested in a UK Market anything that is UK specific is always of far more importance to me than an International SE returning Global (read mainly US)results.

When Freeserve went over to INK UK filtered and before I got flushed out to sea there was a definate increase in enquiries - the using the ISP SE thing- hence if GoTo aint Stuck on the top of a Top 5 ISP, then its usefulness to UK searchers who possible aren't as sophicated as in the US, must surely be questionable.

I had thought of Yahoo Express submission but having not got back in, in 2 years (Dumped from the UK during a category reshuffle)I was concerned that I would Pay-up and still not get into it.

Word from my contact in Freeserve is 'pretty soon'! I'll call on Monday and see if I can find something more specific - especially as I've paid the dosh! As far as I am concerned, if they do go on to Freeserve soon, the less our competitors know about it right now the better.

We've been luck on the flooding:We're close to two rivers converging and it only flooded for about half-a-day last Monday. The high street was impassable and only four houses suffered flooding.
It's Sundat night and tipping it down again. I'm thinking of all those less fortunate people with total flooding. It really is bad.

I've asked some of my friends about SEs and Directories and it comes back to the usual, as you say Tigger.
A portal like Freeserve switching to a different SE or search service could make a big diffrence. The average user does not really care about the search engines/directories, they just want a search button. If they get poor results they look around for another. What will they find? They will find Yahoo! Possibly Lycos (that doggy), Excite (the guy with the pen ink on his face, amongst others), and that's about it.
Goto means nothing to a searcher. They (goto) appear to have decided to provide the search facility to portals, as opposed to marketing themselves.
I just checked and was surprised not to see the goto search.

I'll be waiting a while before making a decision on goto.

Goto UK results have just started to show up on Ask Jeeves UK. Only about a week after the announcement, I would have thought Freeserve would have started first.

Goto UK results are now the first page on Freeserve. Interestingly, it is the first 10 results of Goto's listings, including their Inktomi back up listings if there are not enough paid listings to fill the first 10 places. Second page and onwards are the standard Inktomi pages. Now let's see what happens (apart froma lot of crazy bidding)!

how do you know if you're up agianst a paid GOTO listing, I know with freeserve they offer a "on freeserve" search first, is this where the paid listing will go?

Just checked all my listings with freeserve and so far nothing dropped YET.

Type in 'website promotion' and you will see what it looks like. I also typed in 'cybermarketing' which has no paid listings, but still got a return from UK Goto on the first page. It looks just like the normal Freeserve page apart from a 'provided by Goto' logo on the right and bid prices against the listings.

I think they are still playing around with it. Now I'm ONLY getting the top 20 GOTO listings. Nothing further than that. Probably take a day or two to calm down. Look at the crazy bidding starting on casinos, a lot of people out there really don't understand how PPC works or how to get value for money. Call in the SEOs!

When Tradal isn't averaging down their USA bid, they are missing a good thing.
Looks like the players just don't understand PPC. Unreal!

imho
