one of the guys in the office today was doing a search on goto and it would seem that one of the sites came up for the keyword in positions 2,5,6,22,24 and 40. There are also some mirrors on top of this of course but the thing that baffles me is that the exact same url is bidding 6 times for the same word.

any thoughts? I didn't post the search because I didn't think it would be very nice but I will if you guys think I should.

"exact same url is bidding 6 times for the same word"

I've never seen this happen before (its not inktomi results is it?) I have been able to get competitors mirror sites removed (mirrors violate goto's TOS)......best bet would be to give goto a call and let them know the situation (I think it actually took me 5 or 6 calls before the changes were made)...

as we are running with it they are actually separate sites with the same base url and the only thing different is the query string. It looks like a reseller type program but the url url showing under the listing in goto is just the straight base url.

<added>most of them are exactly the same just with a different person's name on the top</added>

here is my thought, based on this result, if I have a dynamic site that uses query strings I could open different accounts and target a different super section of my site and thereby rank for the same keyword multiple times. Other engines list all of these resellers as subpages of the same site. Goto seems to be a way around this.

<added>this goes into spamming etc and I would rather not but it would seem that goto doesn't seem to care</added>

This sounds like a clear violation of Goto's TOS... If I was you I would give them a call at 1-877-999-4686... If you try to emulate what these people are doing without taking care of the problem your just going to end up jacking up the prices....

just to clarify this seems unethical and not something I would do or like to see other people doing
