I have a few $.o1 kw's, in the #1 spot, they get about 3-400 searches a month, I only get about 3.5% of the clicks..Hmmmm I have some really good positions (upper first page results) but don't seem to get more than 1-8% clicks. Maybe my write-ups bite!!! LOL
Maybe people don't click on #1's but go further down or in the middle.. I remember looking at this last year and found that a lot of folks tend to hit the middle of the page first.
Any thought/info on this subject..
TIA,

Ok, now.. what can this mean when one has good position, but low click %'ages. Can it be that the "Ad block" is poor? or does it mean that people don't (cause they know) click #1 as much as they do #5's...
I'm sure the "ad block" has a play, but I know on one of then I offer something "FREE" and it still gets only 4-5%..
PS: the free item is not a cheapie!
Your thoughts..

First, the total search number you use can only be for GoTo searches. So the total clicks you're talking about must be only GoTo clicks -- taken from your server logs, and not the total clicks you get charged for, which includes all the partner sites.
Now since that's the case, isn't it possible that you're seeing evidence that GoTo's search report can be highly skewed on some phrases? All kinds of search hits that aren't "real" searches go on at GoTo. I make a lot of them myself!
I can understands minapple's success -- the longer the search phrase, the less likely that GoTo will have a distorted search report for it. But I don't get too upset about low click-through percentages with GoTo. I mean, who searches on GoTo after all? It's a corrupted sample, isn't it?
At least that's how I'm thinking right now.
But, hey, thanks for all the welcomes --I felt like I just walked into e-Cheer's --"Where everybody knows your IP."
WebSpinner,
My guess would be to take a good, long look at the ad block. There was a short, but good discussion on this subject about 3 months ago that really started me thinking about how users really view things.
My site covers a resort/vacation destination so I went for the "tropical paradise" type ad copy instead of the "FREE!!!" route. But that's a hard call --"FREE" is hard to beat anywhere, anytime, and I've noticed that the guys right below me (who keep trying to get ABOVE me) go for the "LOWEST RATES" type stuff. It sure would be interesting to compare notes with them to see which avenue works best.
Also, sometimes an average click-thru % can be a good thing. My main term is running around $2.00 a pop, and if my % went much higher, I'd have to mail GoTo the title to my car.
