From the GoTo monthly client report:
"...starting March 8, 2001, GoTo will provide all the search results for Go.com....Since GoTo listings are the only search listings being delivered on Go.com, our advertisers are likely to see an increase in traffic. The traffic from Go.com is likely to taper off over time." (the bold letters are my doing, not in the original email). Can't say I disagree.

OK, so they're taking over the search results on Go with the full expectation that it will die a slow painful death once poeple realize what's going on? Doesn't say much for the desirability of GoTo's 'product,' does it?

Jeez... I wish Go's domain name had just been deactivated. This is sad...

"with the full expectation that it will die a slow painful death once people realize what's going on? Doesn't say much for the desirability of GoTo's 'product,' does it?" - maybe they're just repeating what the Disney people told them they expect to happen with GO. GO may be expected to die a slow death not because of the GoTo search results, but because of Disney's plans (or lack of them except to milk the cow as much as possible while it's still alive) for GO...

Why wouldn't Disney want to save an engine like GO? Just letting it fade out slowly isn't right. Why wouldn't you use a good tool by re-adapting it somehow?

mivox - for what it's worth, they did deactivate infoseek.com (probably still hoping they can sell it).

"Why wouldn't you use a good tool by re-adapting it somehow?" - because they are the ones that brought it to where it is now. They didn't know what to do with it right from the start.

> they did deactivate infoseek.com

Yeah, I saw that post too... I'm hoping someone will rescue it, and restore it to its pre-Disney glory.

Goto results on Go? Look at the URL - the results are actually hosted by Goto! They've basically created a go-branded search on their site.

Letting Go fade away is about the worst idea I've ever heard! What a waste of traffic!

odd... the day I posted that, repeated attempts to access infoseek.com returned could not loacte the server errors. They must have been moving it around to a new nameserver or something...

Looks like Infoseek URL just goes to GO.com now. Did GO do anything with the GO Guides directory, or has that simply been tossed out? It's a shame to see Infoseek evaporate, and all the work put in by the GO Guides simply tossed out. Just making the darn thing searchable by the public might have given it some signs of life.
