How many times you wish to be seen?

Not to hard to figure this one out.
You can decide how many times you wish to be seen.
Do a search on almost anything and review the results.
The SE results may vary in the order that they are presented.

dogpile will return the following:
Looksmart - ya pay to get in
GoTo - top 10 bids [much cheaper than AOL, NS, AV etc]
FindWhat - top 10 bids [another cheap source]
DirectHit - yup
ODP - they are everywhere!
Sprinks by About [just recently added and may be the third PFP play for some]
Google - sure but, they tend to timeout before results can show.
RealNames - nuf said
Kanoodle - 4th PFP and may be useful for DVD, music sites etc.
etc....

The SE source order seems to be based relevancy AND what kind of partnership deal they cut with the PFP engines. Note where they place AV.
As to how much PFP to play to get into dogpile, you can pick your own cutoff point.

Most of us see dogpile in our logs.
We may see more if the owner, InfoSpace, continues to move aggressively "behind the scenes".

Thanks, Mike. Yes, DP is a regular with me even on terms that I do not bid in the GoTo. What portals or sites actually promote dogpile? They've been around a looooong time, are they just depending upon "being found" as a method of growing their user base?

I get quite a bit out of their "directory results" when they choose to display these before the pay per click sites. On these days they rank 3rd in referrals behind AOL and MSN.

Seems that their directory results usually have the keyword in the domain name. However, I haven't a clue as to how to get into Dogpile's directory. The results also appear to be quite old for the directory as sites that I know of which were down for a few months are still appearing.

I might have posted this before, but there is a spider called thunderstone, with all dashes in the spider name. That one supplies the dogpile directory results, unless I'm mistaken?

I had a site appear there, first of its kind, and the only spider that got to it was the thuderstone one. Look for it in your logs, find the ip, and I'm sure you can get to the site.

Cheers,

Excelent post Mike, thank you.

"...and may be useful for DVD, music sites etc.
etc.... "

Could you expand on this please? What advantage would a music/movie site get with Kanoodle listings? I have an electronics site. Whould it benefit me?

Gary

My observation comes from an experience we had a year ago. Their demographic may have changed.

Music and entertainment type stuff seemed to convert while more mature products [read viagra] did not convert. I'd be interested in what others have to say on this subject.

If you bid on FindWhat & Kanoodle, on Metacrawler, which has similar numbers to Dogpile, you can get top ranking on pretty much any keyword you want. Try it.

Nice post Mike. And the link to infospace was appreciated. (ot: when did they move to right side menus?)

Dogpile started showing some pretty nice returns for me on moderately competitive two-word phrases. I checked one and found my position to be slot 5 in the GoTo section even though I hadn't bid it. Take a look at the referral string

Nice!
