For the terms I bid on there are a slew of minimum bidding "search engines" bidding in Adwords.
These "search engines" simple syndicate Overture search results and push the search at a higher priced keyword, similar but not the same.
So not only are pushing up my Google adwords CPC they are making my pay for this traffic through Overture on the more expensive keyword.
I've tracked the ROI on these sites and it is much lower. Not a zero ROI as the traffic is 'real' search traffic, but still much lower than if I targeted the correct keywords.
I've emailed both Google and Overture looking for some help.
Overture replied with:
We would like to inform you that as an advertiser with Overture, your search listings for Overture account 123456789 will appear on all of our partner search engines. It is not possible for advertisers to chose[sic] on which sites their listings appear.
Google: still waiting
not really good enough me thinks. But then again, I can't see why it would bother either engine as they both profit from this.
