A few months ago there were a few threads about lycos's adbuyer program and how it was not that great. Anybody having any improvement? We are looking for our next PPC and I was curious if things had improved and if it was worth my time.

The jury is still out for us.

Nothing interesting to report. Hopefully, 2003 will be better.

Do you think the fact that Overture ads appear on the same page affects the CTR? I was taking a look at lycos and I saw our ads from overture at the top and if we went ahead on lycos, those would appear on the side.

Normally I just copy one PPC ad over to the next PPC we list on, making slight changes for title and copy length. I figure that if I have title and copy that works, that why mess with it. Perhaps a title a copy change for lycos to catch other eyes might be in order since my overture copy is already in a prime spot.

I think Lycos has a serious attitude problem towards PPC advertising. It is like the way an adolescent responds to being forced to attend a cousin's wedding - "Fine, I'll go, but I won't enjoy it and I'll make sure you know it every step of the way".

Lycos probably doesn't like the idea of getting wimpy cents per click rather than dollars per impressions (which was rampant during the lost era). Either that, or they simply do not have the traffic.

How would you explain the display of Overture ads when they have their own PPC program? Do you think Google will ever show Overture's ads on the top just because they can get some extra dollars?

Lycos PPC ads also suffers from ad design problems. They are just not prominent enough. If they want to replicate adwords success, they need to ape it completely. To start with, the Lycos ads should have a different background (not white).
