are keyword phrases different for adwords compared to Google?

It is my understanding that if I optimize for "widget manufacturing Canada" that I may still be found on a search for "widget manufacturing", just not as high as another site that has optimized for the latter phrase.

Perhaps I am incorrect?

If my assumption is correct, do Google Adwords work differently? The reason that I ask is that I just purchase ppc for "widget manufacturing Canada" - as per my keyword research indicated is a better term than "widget manufacturing". If you do a search for the second phrase, my client does not come up in Google adwords. So I added both keyword phrases to the campaign...

Can anyone steer me correctly on this? Perhaps I should be in the keywords forum, but I am wondering specifically about Google.

Thanks! And Happy Thanksgiving to my fellow canucks this weekend!

Google have got a great tutorial which explains how the different uses of exact match, phrase match, broad match and negative words can have different impacts on the times when the ads will be shown. Couple that with the fact that you have the country selection, the syndication preferences, the CTR, the popularity, the price and the "simple" program is not quite so simple.

I would urge you to read the tips page at [adwords.google.com...] and the full strength FAQ at [adwords.google.com...] and get real familiar with the editorial procedures. In particular avoid superlatives, poor grammar, repetition and make sure that what you offer is on the page you deep link to, unlike Overture editors Google don't go hunting for the relevant content.

If you use phrase match i.e. include your keyword on "'s then if your phrase is somewhere in the search your ad will be shown. if you use exact match (square brackets [like so] then only if that phrase is typed will your ad be shown, it's a good way of keeping a keyword with a poor CTR in your campaign without Google switching it off for less than 0.5% CTR.

Enjoy playing with the tool.
