I am srongly considering going to Shanghai for 6 weeks or so. I will take my laptop and hope to carry on working once there. I have found a nice place, but it does not provide internet. I wonder, does anyone know a nice, cheap place that I can go to work with my laptop on the internet? Either using wi-fi or cable. A degree of privacy would be nice. I know that internet cafes abound. But do they allow one to use their own laptop? Do any of them offer a nice enviroment for working?

I am right in Shanghai now. Many hotles have internet access services here, so it's not a problem for you. But if you want to use your own laptop in internet cafe, it maybe a little problemic!

Thanx m8. With the hotels - is that wi-fi access in the lobby/business center? What is the cost per hour? I am quite price sensitive as I hope to do a full working day on the laptop each day.

As an international city, Shanghai will provide you with top class service. You need not worry about anything, even the price. Since i have no experience living in hotel, i can not give you the accurate answer, maybe it's free, maybe 3 Yuan per hour for internet access.
Where are you from? You can consult to Shak for detail. He has quite several staying here in Shanghai.
If you need further assistance, you can also feel free to contact me. Redstorm

:)

redstorm thanks for your kind words

Shanghai internet access in hotels was like round $20 a day in the 5 star hotels. and I am sure you can achieve a full working day a lot of the time.

however uploading large files or doing FTP etcd with US servers may be slow

good luck and see you in Shanghai

My answers:

Most decent hotels offer high-speed Internet access for free or around 10 USD per day.

Prepaid dial-up access cards are available all over the city.

If you are an extreme mobile user, you can purchase GPRS service package (provided by China Mobile). It is 1500 RMB (200 USD) and is good of one year. You can then use your mobile phone to access Internet anytime. You can later sell it at eachnet.com (an ebay website)

For hotel informaiton, take a search at ctrip.com. For pre-paid dial-up card, try cncard.com. For GPRS package, visit www.cmcc.com.cn

around 10 USD per day.

This was the price according to my experience about 3 years ago in 4 stars hotel. Maybe it is cheaper now.

Great to hear that so many people are coming to China, I just settle down my office in China.

Everything is wonderful except the living condition is very different from western countries.I don't know what is the meaning of sick for 2 years already, now I am really seriously sick after living in China for 2 weeks even I am a native Chinese. It is hot, hot, dirty and dirty.

I think I will meet shak in ShangHai on Sep if he is coming.

"hotels offer high-speed Internet access for free"

I would be so grateful if you could suggest some hotels that have free high-speed internet in public areas. This sounds incredibly exciting.

[english.ctrip.com...] and [elong.net...] are two leading online travel suppliers in China. The aforementioned website are their english version websites. You can search for hotels in Shanghai. Lots of them have free Internet access.
