Hi everyone,

I am going to raise an important issue which i believe must be directly concerning every webmaster.

To illustrate say I own a website with .com extension and I have been running my website
for last 2 years. The website provides information to examiness of various university exams
in India.

Now my q is what happens if someone else by chance gains access to my username and pssword to my account. Do i lose my website to him.

What options are available to me once it happens.

Also are there any steps which i am supposed to take in advance to ensure that in any unlikely event, I am able to establish my legal ownership of site considering my website provides just information collected from various sources primarily and i am a small webmaster running website singlehandadly.

Any particular reference in indian context will be extremely apprecited.

Are you referring to your domain account or web hosting account? In either case that would not be good. There are ways to recover your account if you can prove your identity to certain registrars. However the procedures would depend on your registrar. Likewise, hosting companies will have their own policies on this. You'll have to contact them directly.

The best thing to do is provide your contact information, in full, to the domain registrar or host. They will use that information to contact you in case of such a discrepancy.

I'm not familiar with the laws in India, but you may need to retain an attorney if legal steps become necessary.

If you change your password regularly and keep your contact information up to date, then there should be no problem. It is fairly rare that someone will be able to hack into your account like this.

Therefore many biggies in India only registered with certain hosting companies and domain name providers. Laws are very weak in India and better you have a client-business relationship with your hosting/domain name provider - Such that a phone call can solve the entire problem.

very true laws in india specially in the area of intellectual proprty rights and information technology appear to be very weak and still in nascent stage. furthermore even their enforcement is a big challenge again. so the best idea is to find a suitable registrar and host which can allow for better client service as correctly pointed out it seems.

Earlier I had registered my domain name and hosted the website with the same reseller. Since I wish to change hosting, is it advisable to change the reseller for domain name registration also?
Thanks

it doent matter if you keep your domain with old or new host just changing name servers will do the job.

but if you feel the new host is giving some better then you may transfer domain to the new host
