In this article [gulfnews.com], it is reported that there are moved underway to "develop domain names in the Arabic language", much the same as similar efforts in the past for multiple native-labguage domains.

"The new project will let the domain names be keyed into the system in Arabic."

Interestingly, although previous efforts used an IE pluging, the Arabic Name system "currently only operates on the Netscape platform, with talks taking place "with Microsoft's local office to get its Explorer service to offer support to the Arabic domain name."

Interesting, and worth watching.

Again this looks like a server-side solution that will only work where the plug-in is installed. I wish them luck in finding a solution to this, but it sounds suspiciously like a number of other native language domain name projects we have tracked over the years here. To date none of these plug-in/extension solutions seem to have gained enough momentum to be adopted on a global scale. It seems to me that the only way to get the native domain names off the ground would be for some of the Internet standards bodies to step forward with an international solution. That might be like hoping for the UN to come up with an internationally acceptable plan for world peace though... ;)
