Alright, now I have a dilemma on my hands. Do I stick with my mere 100 mbps fiber optic connection or do I jump on the Yahoo bandwagon at 1 gbps? I'm truly going to have trouble sleeping tonight... ;)

article [iht.com]

...said Monday that Yahoo Japan and Softbank BB would start offering a new optical fiber-based broadband service.

Softbank will provide the service at speeds of up to one gigabyte per second and charge users ¥4,200, or $38, a month, the company said in a statement.

Today I tried to register for the service.

Looks like its not fully rolled out yet as the response I got was "we'll email you when its available in your area".

FWIW: Im within walking distance of Mr.Son's Headquarters

I wonder if Mr.Son has to wait before he can get the service too?

Definitely something to look forward too :)

Peace,
Kaz

This is going to be scary. Every user on this network has the power to severly damage a site/user using their connection. They will be able to DoS anyone with their powerful connections. :o

This may be related, according to this article [story.news.yahoo.com],

Japanese Internet firm Softbank Corp. (news - web sites) asked a court to block a government plan for distributing high-speed bandwidth to mobile phone operators, saying it would bar new entrants until 2012.

and

Softbank said its participation in the ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line) Internet business helped it create competition resulting in the lowest prices in the world.

Softbank recently purchased Japan Telecom and is gearing up to challenge the other big players in the telecommunications market. I think this article is more focused on their protest against the Japanese government's plan to allocate certain frequencies only to the established players for their 3G phones. Softbank wants to get their foot into this market.

That one quote you highlighted Woz, about their ADSL involvement, was right on the money. That's been a real foundation of their strategy of late...provide more for less. This is evident with the GigaBB, as this new GB service is being touted.

What are the typical upload speeds you can obtain with ADSL in Japan?

I find the upload speed is one of the great limitations with connections. ie only 256kbps up on a 1.5Mbps down connection.

Prices have started to get more reasonable here in Australia for the 1.5Mbps connections:
A$50 (US$36) per month with 20GB download
A$99 (US$72) per month unlimited download

Looking at the YahooBB site they have the following limits posted for their ADSL packages:

  • 50 Mbps down - 3 Mbps up
  • 26 Mbps down - 1 Mbps up
  • 12 Mbps down - 1 Mbps up
  • 8 Mbps down - 0.9 Mbps up
  • 0.96 Mbps down - 0.96 Mbps up

  • 100 Mbps down - 100 Mbps up *fiber

Itscom has the following:-

CABLE INTERNET
*512kbps down 128kbps up
*8mbps down 256kbps up (I use this one)
*30mbps down 10mbps up (I'm thinking about this one)

BFlets
* 100mbps both ways (I think - doesn't explicitly distinguish up/down)

ADSL
* 1mbps down 512kbps up
* 24mbps down 1mbps up
